Why should I choose a private speech therapist?
A parent might opt for private therapy if their child does not qualify for community or school district therapy services even when a disorder is present. The family might prefer more individualized therapy than group therapy offered in the school.
How long is a typical therapy session?
Sessions are 30-45 minutes long, depending on the client’s needs.
Can I use my insurance to cover private speech therapy?
Insurance plans cover some variation of therapy, depending on the patient’s diagnosis. KCK Therapy services, is a out of network provider with all insurance companies at this time, We can provide paperwork at your request for you to forward to your insurance company. Many of our clients are able to get reimbursed via out-of-network benefits. Please contact your insurance company directly for details regarding your out-of-network benefits. Our rates are comparable to other individual providers in the area, and less expensive than therapy in a hospital setting.
Insurance companies determine what they will cover based upon what they say therapy should cost, otherwise known as the reasonable market value, not on the actual amount charged. They may also use a percentage of Medicare rates as the basis for what they will reimburse, even if you aren’t eligible for Medicare. Fair Health Consumer website is where you can see what an objective source says the typical fees are in your area. Now that you have the local rates for your area, you can call your insurer to find out what they agree to pay and determine your deductible.

Filing a Claim by Mail
If you are not able to file your claim for reimbursement online, you may file a paper claim form, attach a copy of your therapist’s bill, and mail it to your insurance company.
You can find the claim form on your insurance company’s website, where you can print it out. If you have already paid and you are filing for reimbursement, write in bold letter and highlight on the form that “PATIENT HAS ALREADY PAID PROVIDER – PLEASE REIMBURSE PATIENT”
- Diagnosis – You’ll enter this as a code, which will be located on your invoice with an abbreviated code.
- Place of Service – Enter code XX
- Description of Services – CPT is the code for what kind of service your therapist provided, and should be on your therapist’s invoice.
- Your therapist’s NPI
- Provider’s Signature – Fill this in with “See Attached Invoice”. Most of the time, this is sufficient.
- Assignment – Do not sign anything that says “authorized assignment”, since you have already paid your therapist and are filing for reimbursement. If you authorize or assign your benefit, that means the insurance company will attempt to send the reimbursement to the therapist instead of you.

Why aren’t you in-network for insurance?
So that your therapist is able to freely focus on what’s best for your child/children in treatment. Sessions are free from the detrimental breaks between sessions that frequently occur while awaiting authorization/reauthorizations from insurance.
Evaluations and treatment start promptly rather than the long wait time that can occur with insurance which includes getting pre-authorization to test, then testing, and then getting authorization for treatment which may not last long enough to fully address the clients needs/goals
An ever-increasing number of insurance plans deny claims for speech therapy for diagnoses other than those related to severe developmental delays and disorders, such as autism and various syndromes. For this reason, regardless of whether a particular provider is in-network with your insurance, it’s likely you will pay out-of-pocket for speech therapy services.
Your therapist is able to spend time better preparing for your sessions and has time to research evidence based practices to address areas of need, rather than spending hours on the phone with insurance companies trying to deal with denied claims.
